Here are five tips when building chicken coop nesting boxes;
1. Most people think that you need to build one nesting box per chicken, but actually chickens are social creatures. Even if you were to build them a box each chances are that they’ll still all try and cram into the one box! So the usual advice is when building chicken coop nesting boxes, that are large enough for up to 4 hens.
2. They are easy peasy to make. Although they are called ‘chicken nesting boxes’ you actually don’t need to build a fancy wooden box. Grab a milk crate, a fruit box, a large old plastic bowl or hang – even a big ol’ handful of straw. Anything that is comfortable for your hens to lay on, but easy for you to clean.
3. Size really doesn’t matter in this case. Some will say you should be building chicken coop nesting boxes that are somewhere around 12 – 15 inches high, wide and deep but realistically so long as the chickens can comfortably sit in them any size is fine. If in doubt go larger!
4. Accessible - Make sure that your hens can get into their chicken coop nesting boxes! If you are using a plastic bowl or crate make sure that you cut the front out or take a side down so that your hens can get into their nest easily.
5. Try not to use wood for too long. As you know chickens poo. A lot. They also breathe out a fair amount of moisture. The combination of these and just general coop life will make keeping wooden chicken nesting boxes clean a real hassle.
Once you have built your chicken coop nesting boxes fill them with straw, sawdust or any other comfy organic material and viola!
Happy chickens that will thank you with plenty of eggs!
