pssst – I’ll let you in on a secret – when I first started out I thought that chickens slept in nests. I completely overlooked the whole need for a separate roost.
Then I did some digging and found out that a roost is very different from a nest and why it is so important for your flock.
In a nutshell a roost is something that the chickens sleep on.
Where do most birds build their nests? That’s right – up high. This is a survival instinct from way back. The higher the better. So for your flock to feel safe when they sleep you need to build chicken coop roosts higher than their nesting boxes.
There are three tips for this;
1. Install a plank or rail that is strong enough to hold the weight of the chickens. If you use a plank, round out the edges to make it easier for the birds to hold onto.
2. Make sure that each chicken has enough room on the roost – about 10 inches per chook. You may need to install a couple of perches.
3. Make each roost the same height. Remember how I said that they like higher ground – the higher the better? Well, if one perch is higher than the others they will all fight for that one roost.

The most common question that gets asked at this point is;
“If nest boxes are also essential when you build chicken coop accessories – why can’t you just put the nest boxes up higher and kill two birds with one stone? ” (No pun intended!)
Some people say that chickens do not like to sleep in their nests and they may be right.
I prefer to keep my nests and roosts separate because I like to have clean eggs and easy clean nests!
Seriously.
Chickens do most of their pooing in their sleep, so imagine the state that your nest would get into if they were to spend most of their time in it – especially the night time. It would be like us spending all day in bed!
By keeping the nests and roosts separate not only are the nests easier to clean, but it is also possible to put down material under the roosts that will help you to keep the coop cleaner too.
