Nests should always have lots of space, allowing the chicken to find the right spot for their eggs naturally and happily. The chickens need to have a safe and protected nest to lay in that is away from feeding areas.

When building a chicken coop using the right materials is also very important.

Try to avoid MDF or other low quality timber. This is not very water resistant and will not stand up to the weather nor the rigors of everyday life in the coop.

‘Chicken wire’ or ‘chicken mesh’ may be great at keeping chickens in, but it is not so good at keeping predators out. It also rusts very easily so it pays to use a heavy bound wire for your enclosures.

If you make safety and comfort a priority when building a chicken coop you should minimize those stress levels – both yours and the chickens – and you should have no trouble getting a regular supply of eggs from your girls.

Another good trick for regular egg production is to make sure that you remove any eggs that have been laid daily. This allows the hens the space and encouragement that they need to lay more eggs.

To do this effectively, you will need to consider how easy it will be for you to gently collect those eggs from your coop while causing as little disturbance to the laying area and as little stress as possible to the chooks.

You will also need to keep in mind protection of the nesting areas from the weather when you are building a chicken coop. Wet or cold nests will cause stress and little to no egg production from your chooks. In cold climates a good sturdy roof that has no leaks and a heat lamp is definitely recommended to keep your hens in a good laying pattern.

In warm climates you need to ensure that your coop is well ventilated and preferably raised off the ground so that it catches any through wind to help keep your chooks cool in the heat of the afternoon. Lots of shade and fresh water is vital for keeping summer chickens happy and producing lots of eggs!

If you follow these simple tips when you are building a chicken coop, you will create a happy, healthy and stress free environment which encourages your hens to lay tasty fresh eggs regularly!
