Or are you?
Have you thought about where you are going to build your coop – or were you planning on just sticking it in the backyard up against the fence?
Because when you build a hen house the location is actually a really important factor in whether your project will be a success or not.
Before you build a hen house you need to take into consideration the following five elements and choose your location based on them.
1. Safety: You can reduce the risk to your flock from predators if you build a hen house near your house or in a place that is well lit at night to deter any predatoes that are roaming at night.
If you live on a farm, ideally you can build your coop near to the barn or fields where large animals may be grazing as these will also deter any sneaky creatures from hurting your chooks.
2. Shelter: It is really important that when you build a hen house you are aware of the worst weather conditions that are going to affect your chooks. Always try to raise the coop so that your chickens won’t get hurt by any flooding that might occur in large downpours.
Also, if heat is more of a problem where you live then raising the coop off the ground and having large (covered) windows can allow for good air flow to keep your birds cool while nesting.
3. Sunlight: To lay eggs, chickens need approximately 14 hours of light a day. Make sure that the windows that you install face the sun so that the chicken coop is not only warm but also bright during the day. When you build a chicken coop, do whatever you can to maximise the amount of light coming in.
4. Exercise: Believe it or not, chickens need exercise too! So having a chicken run allows your chickens to get lots of exercise while also keeping them protected during the day from any lurking predators. Make sure that when you build a hen house run that it is big enough, the more space the better!
It’s also good to keep in mind that you might want to get more chooks in the future. Make sure there is enough space around the coop that it can grow with your feathered family if need be!
5. Easy Access: You need to make sure when you build a hen house that it is easy to access. You want to be able to get to the coop easily from your house so that you can collect the eggs and feed the chooks at your convenience.
You also want to make sure when you build a hen house that it is easy for you to get in and walk around. You will need to be able to clean the coop and collect the eggs easily without disturbing the nests too much or causing yourself any pain in the process.
Take the time to really look at the location of your coop before you build. You don’t want to build a hen house in the wrong place!
